APTERS
Appropriate Paper Technology (APTERS), is an organization based in Lusaka, Zambia. It was set up in 1990 to produce mobility aids with recycled paper and cardboard to assist physically challenged children while empowering physically challenged adults.
The objectives adopted by those involved in the project are:
To produce mobility aids using paper technology for physically challenged children e.g. Cerebral Palsy. The mobility aids include: standing frames, chairs, wedges and walkers.
To support the work carried out by the Physiotherapy Department at UTH
To offer economic and personal empowerment to persons who are physically challenged, by regular and paid employment.
On average, APTERS produces over 675 mobility aids a year, using appropriate paper technology techniques, for children with polio and/or any form of other physical challenge. The equipment made by APTERS provides children who are physically challenged with low-cost intervention tools that are instrumental to their treatment and rehabilitation.
The centre and workshop operate from much-needed donations, especially as the Support Group subsidises the cost of each mobility aid as nearly all parents are unable to meet the cost themselves.

In 2010 Niki Harris (Formerly Niki Woodley) returned to Zambia and started working in a local school as well as working with a child with Autism. Since then Niki has been working towards a goal of Inclusive education after seeing many children being excluded from schools, who could not handle their needs. After gaining her Masters in Inclusive Education and studying many different programs for learners with difficulties she launched a company to offer help to children in the community get the extra help needed to keep up with expectations of school. As well as to help parents at home work towards an effective home environment for these children. Services that the company provides are as follows: Training staff; PECS communication system; SCERTS; designing programs for children to follow at school and home; individual therapy to work on numerous difficulties (fine-motor, behavior, communication, sensory difficulties, etc); developing IEP’s.
